The Working Properties Of Throttle Positioning Sensor

by Elinor Tran

The main part responsible for information conveyance in a car is the throttle positioning sensor. This sends signals to the car computer concerning the position of the throttle for proper fuel regulation. Effective information cannot be delivered when a throttle is not well positioned and functional. A lot should be considered in ensuring that this unit is well maintained to achieve fulfilling results.

TPS is made up of mechanical parts which are frequently in motion. This makes the parts likely to wear out after some time. Failure to conduct proper servicing will eventually result to cases of malfunction in the whole system of a car.

It is easy to notice whenever TPS is not in fine conditions. Failure to do proper adjustment leads to damages with several symptoms being noticed. The car will be slow to accelerate in some instances and resist performing certain functions. There may also be abrupt speeding experienced when driving on a smooth road or it can also halt unexpectedly.

Numerous damages are recorded when emerging symptoms are not seriously considered. Fuel consumption increases, the engine fails in most cases and there may be resultant problems when changing gears. This in return raises the risk of engaging in accidents and also brings about financial loss.

There are several ways in which one can check and adjust the TPS. The first consideration lies on whether the sensor is a switch, potentiometer or combination. Switch is easily adjustable while the potentiometer consists of a variable resistor making it difficult to adjust. Combination type varies depending on the design since some are adjustable while others are not.

One can easily check the throttle positioning sensor and conduct relevant adjustments. It can be done by unplugging the TPS, test for voltage and resistance and finally adjust it. The steps are straightforward and anyone can do it.
