A recall has been announced for the Jeep Liberty. The model years impacted is for 2004 and 2005, affecting more than 200,000 automobiles. The issue is with road salts used in specific states, which can trigger the rear lower control arms, an important part of the steering system, to rust and break

Getting rid of ice leads to corrosion

In April of 2011, according to MSNBC, the National Highway Traffic Security Administration opened an investigation into nine claims the bureau had received concerning the lower control arms on the rear wheels of Jeep Liberty models from the 2004 and 2005 model years. The bureau had been told that the control arms could shear off unexpectedly.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration got more complaints and, by Sept 2011, had decided an engineering analysis was needed. This was when it was found that ice salts used on the roads in the winter were connected to it.

Announcing recall

To be able to fix the lower control arms issue, 2005 and 2005 model years of the Jeep Liberty SUV is being recalled, which was announced by Chrysler, part of Fiat SPA and parent business of Dodge and Jeep.

There are 209,724 units that the recall could impact, according to USA Today. Only states that use these salts in the winter (Delaware, CT, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Montana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Maryland, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Wisconsin, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.) are likely to be impacted by the recall though.

Any vehicles manufactured between July 3, 2003 and July 14, 2005 is affected by the recall. An automobile Identification number in the driver's side door frame will tell you when it was manufactured.

Eighty four inci-dents

Inside Line reports that there have not been any accidents or injuries due to the defect, although there have been 84 incidents of the lower control arm braking reported to Chrysler. The nearest Chrysler or Jeep dealership will put new control arms on Liberty SUVs when they are brought in by owners. When the recall begins at the end of April, Chrysler will notify owners.
