Ford Plans Improvements For Myford Touch Software

The Detroit Free Press reports that Ford will release major improvements to the MyFord Touch infotainment screen. Complaints that the system is not fast enough and overly cluttered will apparently be tackled by the brand new software build. Current owners of a MyFord Touch-equipped Ford automobile will be able to upgrade totally free.

Tweaking the MyFord Touch system

Ford launched touch-screen systems in the 2010 Ford Edge and 2010 Lincoln MKX. Since then, improved versions of MyFord Touch have appeared in the Explorer and Focus.

The system will be twice as fast as it was previously with the brand new MyFord Touch software update, as reported by many sources. Access to music, directional navigation, phone calls with Sync and cabin climate control will be easier to access while the interface will be streamlined, as reported by the Free Press.

The design of MyFord Touch was done very well. It is intended to work with Ford's Sync cell phone system well also. While Ford acknowledges that the touch-screen interface has brought the automaker brand new consumers - 2011 Ford Edge sales received a sizable boost - four customer focus groups conducted since MyFord Touch's introduction last fall noted that there was much room for improvement.

Product always improving

The Free Press spoke with Ford's electronics engineering director, Graydon Reitz, who said that Ford is committed to improvement.

"Just as we love our electronic devices and can't live without them, we always want them to be better. And that's exactly what our customers told us," said Reitz.

The 2013 Ford Taurus, Flex and Escape will have the brand new MyFord Touch in them. Software upgrades will be put on a USB stick that will be sent to owners. Self-installation is possible, but the less technically inclined will have the option of going to a Ford dealership for a free installation.

Other MyFord Touch advancements

In addition to being easier to read and navigate, the new MyFord Touch will respond to a wider array of voice commands. Drivers will be able to speak names of sporting events to get then broadcasted with e a Game Finder feature that will be in there.
